Days of sun and temperatures in the 80's give way to only the strongest of cold fronts and the winds seem relentless. March blows! Always. Fushing can be just as hot or cold as the temperature outside. The warm water loving snook and tarpon do thier best to shake off the cold. Redfish and trout being a bit better suited for the cooler temps will look to take advantage of the spring influx of bait by becoming ever more active as the month closes out. <div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal">
Summer is here and it’s the end of school for our young
ones, so let’s get them out to enjoy this amazing area and its many diverse
eco-systems.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We are a lucky bunch.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>One could start a morning hiking some amazing
trails and be jumping a100lb. tarpon hours later.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Or kick off your day tackling Mahi offshore
and finish it catching a mess of bluegills or bass as the sun sets.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>With fresh water, saltwater lagoons, the
mighty Atlantic Ocean, the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, swamps, springs, flowing
fresh water rivers, and so much more within hours of our homes or many times
much closer.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It’s truly a paradise.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Sadly, paradise can be lost, and we must
become active.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>By taking the time to
explore, understand, experience, and enjoy these amazing products of nature.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We can finally appreciate them enough to care
for them!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
With fingers crossed we will have a banner May in the
Atlantic.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Shake off those brown lagoon
blues and bend some rods.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Nearshore and
offshore waters should be teaming with hungry predators ready to crush baits or
lures.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>June, will typically see the
yearly push of giant beach tarpon start off.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Some (cooler) years it’s a bit late, but it’s been warm so be ready.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Large plugs, live pogies, and large live
mullet will get inhaled by the 80-150lb fish.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Find the tarpon by locating schools of Menhaden (pogies) or rolling
fish.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Slowly get within range and get
offerings in front of your targets.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Slow
trolling live baits around bait pods with tarpon in the area will not only
allow you to hook said tarpon, but also get you a mixed bag of everything that
swims and eats fish in our ocean.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Great
fun fishing! Be sure to always keep an eye out for cobia and tripletail, both
can pop up without notice at any time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Cobia have a habit of siting right in or on top of bait dense bait pods
so be sure to drop a cast or to around any and all nice sized pods.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Another by-catch to the “beach” kayak fishing
is one of my favorite fish, the Snook.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Hard fighting, beautiful, and a pleasure to meet at the dinner table!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The snook pretty much has it all.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As summer progresses the snook will fill
Brevard County beaches in preparation for their late summer spawn.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is an opportunity to not only catch “a”
snook, but potentially catch a massive one that will be burned into your memory
forever. <o:p></o:p></div>

Fishing on the Lagoons has been solid with many of our year-round
resident fish finally getting into their winter pattern. Most of the small mullet have left the flats
for deep canals, and only return to the shallows for the late morning
warmup. The Predators are doing the
same! I look for the large Black Mullet
to signify the movement of fish from deeper overnight waters. The trout and redfish will accompany these
big mullet on and off the flats. If I
don’t see big mullet I don’t fish! As
with every year the Black Drum has invaded our winter flats. These fish will tail just like their cousin
the redfish. Though you can take the
smaller and bigger versions on soft plastics like Slayer SST paddle tails, DOA
Shrimp, and Gulp shrimp, but for your best chance a fresh dead shrimp or half
blue crab is the ticket. Sight fishing
is the way to get our shots in water from 1-3ft. deep. <o:p></o:p></div>

Sometimes it’s just fun to hook a fish! Leaving the stress of challenging species for
some fun is not only good for you, but a great way to involve novice anglers
and kids. The cooler months of the Space
Coast can get the shrimp flowing. The
seatrout know and exploit this every year.
Now most of these aren’t going to be your big giant “Gator” trout; those
will be hot-to-trot soon enough. These
little scrappy trout will be 12-20inches and all the fun you can handle on
light tackle. 6wt or less fly gear is
also a blast with them. All the
causeways will have these trout at night and plenty of them have good access. The 2½ inch Savage Gear Mantic Shrimp is a
must use on spinning gear in the 6lb. line class. This durable little shrimp can stand up to a
bunch of fish and keep working well. The
smaller lures the better if you’re looking for fast non-stop action. Fly’s the mimic small baitfish/minnows and
small shrimp can be deadly effective. Go have fun and enjoy some catching; not
fishing!<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;"> You just can’t go wrong sea trout
fishing this time of year. The canals
and deep holes of the entire region will produce steady action on average
(14-20 in.) sea trout, and a cast in the quietest, muddy-bottomed canals could
have you latched on a true Gator trout of 6 pounds or better. The best way to connect with these willing
fish is a 1/8oz. Mission Fishin jig head with an Assassin paddle tail, curl
tail, DOA Shrimp, or Gulp soft plastic.
Slowly bounce this rig along the bottom and wait for the telltale thump
of a lethargic trout. Dead end canals,
especially ones with a natural shore lines, will be loaded; so catch them
up! With natural bait you can free-line
a shrimp or add a bobber to keep it right of the bottom. Though, a fresh cut-bait
soaked on a circle hook might just account for the biggest seatrout. The canal trout will hit early in the day
when lures are fished slowly, and if a flat is close by you can follow the fish
out of the canal as the sun warms the shallows.
Best soft plastic colors are chartreuse, white, and natural.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNoSpacing">
<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 9.0pt;"> January’s persistent west winds
will beat down the surf, and allow adventurous kayak anglers access to some
amazing Pompano action. These silver
sided, tasty gamesters not only grill up nicely, but they fight like crazy on
light river tackle. The troughs,
washouts, and coquina areas that cover Brevard’s beaches from the sand to 100
yards out can all produce Pompano at one time or another. A good sign that any given stretch of beach
is holding Pompano would be the presence of sand spikes, rods that resemble
bamboo shoots, and salty beach anglers sipping coffee. Beware though, keep some distance. Pyramid sinkers pack a heavy punch. Not to mention we one-up our stationary
friends with mobility and agility to chase the marauding Pompano schools. Your standard trout and Redfish rod will do
fine throwing the small Pompano jigs that I like to use. Any small buck tail (synthetic works well),
speck/crappie jig, or a Doc’s Goofy Jig type lure in pink, white, and yellow
will catch Pompano. All of these types
of lures can be rigged single or tandem, and should be worked back with short
vigorous snaps of the rod. Impart this
action “puffing” the sand bottom to mimic the Pompano’s favorite treat, the
sand flea. Though it is not necessary,
one could tip the Pompano jig with cut clam or fresh shrimp (peeled) for a sweetener. Tipping will improve the chances of hooking
the whiting, sheepshead, and black drum that share the same habitat as
Pompano. Be sure to move and search-cast
for the Pompano that could show at high tide right on the sand, or the back
side of a sandbar at low tide. Also, be
sure to rig a rod with lures like Clark spoons or Gotcha jigs incase the
ravenous blue fish and Spanish mackerel that patrol the winter surf show
up. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

It’s tough to sit and write of impending spring fishing on
the Space Coast this year. That is
mostly due to the fact that our winter was much more like spring than typical,
and a warm winter will make everything a little crazy for us anglers. There are many ups and downs when we have a
mild or in this winter’s case, no winter.
Snook will continue to become even more prevalent and push their range
north with every passing warm winter.
Migrations like tarpon, cobia, nearshore kingfish, mangrove snappers,
and many more will happen early by days, weeks, or even months in some
cases. It pays to be on your toes on a
warm winter/spring transition. Couple a
wonky winter with lagoon issues and it will make some areas tough to fish. However it could make others fire off for
some of the best days ever experienced.
Covering ample amounts of water and keeping a sharp eye out for any
indicators of fish is a must on our lagoons for this spring. Pods of large black mullet will typically
hold a few reds and trout so be sure to see that “activity” where you plan to
fish. Dead water, is as it sounds. Will be areas that are devoid of movement be
it baits, large mullet, crabs, rays, puffers, or catfish and should be quickly
past up for greener pastures. Grass is
still hard to find in some areas and fish are taking notice. I’ve seen more fish holding to docks,
mangroves, and hard bottom than ever before.
Be sure to focus in these areas especially when the sun climbs high in
the sky. Black drum are still making a
show on most flats, but will be looking to spawn out and slide to deeper water
as the flats warm more and spring progresses.
Get on these schools while you can to have a blast. Many lures and such will catch them but
nothing beats a fresh dead/live shrimp. Be ready for that topwater seatrout
bite to ramp up as the month draws to an end and they get hungry before the
spawn. As typical I will recommend any
trout over 22inches swims free, and without a doubt any fish over 24inch due to
the fact it can only be an egg bearing female needed for reproduction not a
fish sammich. Also as this month draws
to a close, be mindful of the sad anniversary the 21st holds. That’s right folks! It’s been one year since a massive fish
kill/extinction event rocked our Banana River Lagoon and No-Motor-Zone. Let me tell you it’s been a long year for
those troubled waters. We are seeing
some improvement, many people became aware of an issue unknown prior to, and we
even managed to take steps in a positive direction with the Lagoon Tax. The Banana is still slow with resident fish
like Seatrout and reds, but the visitor species seem to be enjoying some clear water
and lots of bait. We can only hope that
positive signs and positive actions continue to be the “talk of our
Lagoons”. Sadly the No-Motor-Zone (NMZ)
was hit hard and is still stumbling to recover fish stocks. The picture show is my first client caught
fish (black drum) from the NMZ for over a year.
I had stopped fishing it months before the kill due to algae
density. It was a great moment shared
with wonderful clients doing something I love (my job) in an area I’ve grown up
fishing. Pure stoke is what I like to
call it! Its slow but we/I will be back
to sample the NMZ’s bounty.<o:p></o:p></div>

Summer time has come for central Florida’s kayak
anglers. Look for the fishing to be just
as hot as those still and muggy mornings!
The brisk spring winds of May will become a distant memory. Kids are out of school and it’s time to get
fishing. Many of the baits that are so
small in the spring that you won’t even notice them have become perfect bait
sized morsels, and certainly caught the attention of or predatory fish. Threadfins, baby pogies (small Atlantic
menhaden), pinfish, mojarra, and several types of mud minnows will supplement a
diet that has consisted of mullet for the past few months. I will be putting out some short videos on
catching, caring for, and using these baits.
Those video’s, a weekly forecast by Local Lines Charters, and much more
can be found at <a href="http://spacecoastfishingforecasts.blogspot.com/"><i>http://spacecoastfishingforecasts.blogspot.com/</i></a>
be sure to check frequently for updates.<o:p></o:p></div>

In-Shore Lagoons: The
early and late in the day topwater bite is in full swing. Fishing these low light conditions with
walk-the-dog type lures can be an extreamly productive way to spend your time
on the water. It can take some practice
to acheve the side-to-side motion needed to rtuely get the most from this
lure. The reward for a well worked plug
is easily the most hart stopping experience an angler can have. Witnessing any of our “top four” unload on
your plug in the slicked out shallow water will certainly stop a hart. The
space coasts Redfish, Seatrout, Snook, and Tarpon (“top four”) are all predators
that love to go ham for these pieces of plastic. <o:p></o:p></div>

November has crept in and fall came with a bang this
year. We enjoyed a fantastic mullet run
and the surf could still be hot for the first part of this month. As the mullet dwindle flounder with become
frequent catches around Port Canaveral, Sebastian Inlet, and Ponce Inlet. For the fast flowing inlets its best to keep
your kayak out of the main flow and most dangerous sections for safety reasons,
not to mention it’s very tough to effectively kayak fish those areas. Targeting the Intercostal lagoons and beaches
adjacent to these inlets is a great way to safely intercept the flounder as the
push out of our backwater areas and make their way offshore for the winter
spawn. Fish with small live baits
(fishfinder rig), Slayer Inc. SST’s (paddle tail)/jig head, or small bucktail
jigs (tip w/strip bait) on drop-offs, around structure, bottom transitions, and
sand to rock/oyster areas to find the concentrations of fish. Slowly work your baits close to the bottom and
be ready with the landing net! A great
many trophy flounder have been lost by holding their head out of the
water. Flounder have a Houdini Ninja
magical way of spitting the hook as they shake their head on the surface. To get the flounder in the kayak simply put
your landing net a few feet under the water and glide your tasty treat in. Port Canaveral stands as the calmest “inlet”
for anglers to kayak and target flounder.
However, what Port Canaveral lacks in sketchy moving water, it more than
makes up for in large/small boat traffic.
It pays to keep an eye out when on the water, and to understand the
posted security rules. The fall flounder
migration is a great time to test your angling skills on a challenging
opponent. Not to mention the flounder is
one of our best eating fish on the Space Coast.<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
We don’t get many “New” things in our Local kayak fishing
scene, but that has changed! First, for
those with Christmas on the mind Kayaks by Bo in Titusville has started a gift
registry. Now you can pick out the exact
kayak or accessory’s you desire and all those that care can buy it for
you. Yet another great program from the
awesome folks at Kayas by Bo to ensure a great experience on the Space Coast’s
waters. Also, our coastal wave condition
data just got a (free) kick in the pants from CheckTheWaves.com. An enterprising (small) private company has
managed wading through red tape to bring the Space Coast and beyond an amazing
data set produced by several deployed “wave height” buoys close to the
coast. Offering a range of vital information
on wave height, peak period (dominant swell interval), Sea surface, and sea
floor temperature several times an hour for free on their website ensures those
of us ocean fishing from beach, kayak, or boats will be happy. As of writing this article the Cocoa Beach
Buoy is being tested and will see deployment soon after. With buoys already deployed off Jenson beach
and Indialantic Beach this team is just getting started. Several more buoys will be deployed including
one off Daytona Beach that could complement the kayak reachable artificial reef
recently sunk very well. Billy Wells of
Check the waves said “Real time surf reports, driven by real time data”, and I
believe once us fisherman find this resource it will turn to “REEL” time surf
reports. The resource is free, not
funded by the government and a benefit for all who venture to the ocean. The will have and app. coming soon and are
still working on the feel of their website, but the data is flowing and
CheckTheWaves.com has quickly become a “favorites tab” for this surfing
fisherman. Go check them out.<o:p></o:p></div>

September is on the calendar and fall is just around the
corner. Two words should fill every
kayak anglers mind when it comes to this time of the year. Mullet Run!
No, we are not reliving the bad hair fad from the 80’s. I am speaking of the fall mullet (baitfish)
run that will engulf the entire east coast from now until October. For those that have not witnessed the
spectacle of massive mullet pods being demolished by every predator we like. Now is your chance! When cold fronts dip into the Deep South and
typically far before we feel even a chill, mullet of every size will start
their yearly push southward. From finger
mullet to giant (hog leg) mullet they all shift through our waters on an
endless march to the warm winter waters of South Florida. As they pass by our coast the gamefish take
notice. In the lagoons Snook and Tarpon
will feed hard in preparation for winter.
Many times they leave with the bait if the weather cools early. Our resident redfish and seatrout will also
look to do the same, though they don’t leave with the bait. Topwater plugs and soft plastics like the
SlayerInc.com SST mimic the readily available mullet and have you in the fish
for sure. I always tend to have a
topwater rigged at all times for actively feeding fish. The lagoons can be great at these times, but
where the real action goes down is the Atlantic. Miles of bait pour down the beaches in steady
streams. Live baiting in the surf zone and
just outside of the breakers can be phenomenal for us kayakers after a beach
launch. I’ll fish finger mullet on a
fishfinder rig with typically 1oz of weight.
Using 30-40lb leader and 3/0 hook to finish the rig. Keep yourself and kayak a safe distance out
from the break and cast towards the shore.
Maintain the line and hang on.
Everything from redfish, snook, bluefish, flounder, jacks and more will
give you a tug. For large Jacks, Sharks,
Giant Tarpon, and even kingfish look to slow troll Large (8-12inch) Mullet on a
8/0 Circle hook with 4-6 foot of 60lb leader. Many times the surf can be a
challenge for beach launching kayakers at this time of year. When the breakers exceed your comfort level
look to launch from the boat ramp at Port Canaveral for an easy go of it! Fishing inside the port, and the beaches
north or south will have you in steady action.
The areas around Sebastian Inlet will also be alive with tons of bait
and hungry predators. For the artificial
crowd lipped plugs are king, 40-60lb leader and a good selection of floating
and sinking plugs will have you set.
Fish the floaters in the breakers and the sinkers outside for Tarpon and
such. Those of us who have fished this
area for a number of years know the current condition of our lagoon is
unsustainable. We have an opportunity to
secure solid funding through the proposed lagoon Tax. Is the plan that’s been devised enough to fix
these lagoons? Sadly no, but it is a
start down what will be a long path of recovery. And certainly the first time we’ve had an
opportunity of this magnitude. So please
help us stand up for these amazing waterways.

adventures and so much fun on the water. I wouldn't trade my life with
him for anything in this world. He was always "real" with me
about starting my business with a young family and what it would take, but he
was always supportive and proud of what I've accomplished. Anyone who crossed paths with my grandfather
was treated fairly and most became quick friends with this great man. He wasn’t flashy, nor was he rich, and had a
strange obsession with silver ford trucks in the later years..lol (inside
family joke) My grandfather loved his
family and friends passionately and the only stern words I’ve heard him speak
were in defense of either. Infinitely
calm and resourceful; I can think of many occasions offshore when I was very
young. Back in the days of very
unreliable equipment, and half the technology.
His ability to rig (anything) and machinist mind saved our asses many
times. I’ll never forget the day long
mask rings on his face as I scampered around the boat waiting for another diver
to surface, and the boat loads of keys mahi.
I remember the long naps on spray filled rides west (home) propped up
against him and next to my dad (taking all the spray in his face) at the
T-crafts helm. I remember when it became
me taking the full spray in the face and hands gripping the wheel, instead of

would not be the man I am without my grandfather. Many don’t get these opportunities, and I am
so thankful I did. I am happy Grandpa can rest peacefully now and fortunate
that he was with loved ones when he left us.
No hospitals, no machines, just peace.

****Space Coast Fishin Forecast****<br />
Well folks it has happened.
The super high water conditions of our past few weeks are starting to recede. North winds are ushering tons of water south
after it was stuck in place. With this
fish are on the move, couple that with the fall cool down and bait migrations
and hold on, because the fishing is red hot on the IRL, BRL, and M. Lagoon. As this water drops slowly many fish that
have found their way into the flooded backwaters will make their way to more
open flats. Both bait and gamefish will
make this transition so be sure to check the outflows and areas adjacent to “backwater”
marshes for concentrations of bait. The predators
won’t be far behind! Topwater plugs in
low light and <a href="http://slayerinc.com/products/#!/Sinister-Swim-Tail-S-S-T/c/2618370/offset=0&sort=normal" target="_blank">Slayer Inc. SST’s</a> as the sun climbs should have you on fish the
entire day. Look for the slot reds to
be pushed from our mangrove shorelines as this water drops also. They should stage just off the shoreline and
be really hungry.<o:p></o:p></div>

*****Fall Fishing Seminar from Local Lines Charters*****<br />
<br />
Hey folks thanks for checking out <a href="http://www.locallinescharters.com/" target="_blank">Local Lines</a> Fall "Bloginar". This is an on-line seminar series I am
publishing quarterly (winter, spring, summer, and fall) that will cover fishing
on the Lagoons and Near-Coastal waters of Brevard County, Fl (Space Coast). As if a dozen or so (in person) seminars,
monthly articles in Coastal Angler Mag. Brevard and Orlando, and continuous
articles in Merritt Island Now mag every year isn’t enough; we’re gonna bring
you this too! <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
It’s fall on the
Space Coast and if you’re not amp'd on getting some fish, well then you’re not
paying attention. The annual “Fall”
mullet run is kicking off nice with this front\tropical rain event we have been
experiencing for several days. As this
weather event moves out of our area the winds are predicted to stay from the
north. With every cold/cool
front driven north blow we get, more waves of mullet will come. Much like a train that’s hard to slow. As the mullet run increases momentum it’s
hard to slow until they all pass through.
On the Beaches and Near-Coastal waters a steady stream of south bound
mullet will get the attention on every predator in town. Obviously with this much bait in the water it’s
hard to get that artificial bite sometimes.
Having a cast-net and method of live bait retention (bait bucket) is really
paramount to success. In current or surf
that you will encounter while fishing from the Inlets and beaches a “<a href="http://www.flfish.com/how_to/FishFndr.JPG" target="_blank">fishfinder rig</a>” works great with a live mullet, pinfish, croaker, or white bait. Be sure to match the egg sinker size to the
conditions. You want to get the bait
down, but not stifle its movement.
Fishing the jettys, beaches, and inlets in this manner will score you
snook, reds, mangrove, Snapper, jacks, tarpon, and sharks. Slow trolling large mullet 9-14inchs long
from just outside the breakers, all the way to 50ft depths will get you shots
at big kingfish, tarpon, cobia, and sharks.
20-30lb class conventional rods with light tips work well in this live
bait trolling situation. Rig with a “<a href="http://i.cdn-surfline.com/fishtrack/2013/editorial/04_april/bait/bait4.jpg" target="_blank">kingfishlive bait rig</a>” and sub out wire leader to the lead hook with 60-80lb
mono/flouro, but keep the wire to stinger hook.
Find the concentrations of bait to find the fish by foot, boat, or
kayak. It can truly be a sight to behold
if you catch the right day at the right time, so keep an eye to the beaches for
some fun fishing. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
Top method Artificial:
Plugging the beaches with “bomber style” lipped plugs by foot. This can be done with heavy river tackle
10-20lb class spinning setups. Fish the
troughs and washouts from the sand to breakers.
Many times the main target (snook) is in the first trough and even
running bait onto the sand on higher tides.
40lb leader and braid from 10-20lb works well, I typically like braid in
this situation for the lack of stretch and smaller line diameter in churning
waves. Be sure to cast horizontally not
just straight out. You won’t tend to
have much in the way of snags so have some fun with these fish.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Top method Natural Bait:
Live bait trolling like described above.
Mullet are hardy baits so load up that livewell. When you find a fishy area or the bite gets a
bit slow, just toss out a few free ones.
They will likely hang with the boat or the baits your trolling. Fish
always love freebies!<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
The lagoon waters will also burst at the seams as the months
dwindle into the new year. Some bait
will stay through winter, but much of the mullet (most prevalent Space Coast Lagoon bait) will head south to warmer winter waters.
Get those shots at your tarpon (juvi) and snook in the lagoons now,
because after a good cold snap or two they will become increasingly tough to
find. The trout and reds know a change is
coming also, so they will feed heavy in fall to pack on the pounds for
winter. Look for search baits like the
<a href="http://slayerinc.com/" target="_blank">Slayer Inc. SST</a> rigged weedless on a keeper hook to produce fish at all hours
of the day. Favorite colors are Bounty
Hunter, Gumbo, pearl, and molting for this time of year, or just about any time
of the year for that matter. When
conditions allow; a topwater plug can produce explosive strikes at any time of
the day or night. I say when “conditions
allow” due to the amount of floating grass typically encountered this time of
year. Just like your law stops growing
in the fall and winter. The lagoon
grasses will do the same, along with breaking loose, and making it generally
sucky to work anything but weedless.
Focus on areas the make bait change their movements. Things like dock lines, points, and drop-offs
or edges will interrupt the south bound mullet and create ambush points. These ambush points will become fish staging areas
and consistently produce until the lagoon run slows with winters chill. Not that you won’t find tailing reds chomping
on shrimps and such, but most fish will be hunting mullet. As with the beach mullet run, the lagoon one
can become so heavy with bait that an artificial bite is very tough. Grab the net and freeline some mullet, it
works wonders on your catching. The
redfish spawn is in full swing so please be respectful of these fish,
one-and-done (don’t pound the school), and use heavy tackle to limit fight
times. We have a very unique group of
bull reds on the space coast, and it’s our responsibility to care for them. <br />

Top method Artificial:
topwater plugs on outside edges of flats or drop-offs. It doesn’t always happen, but if you find big
schools of bait pushing on a 2ft + drop-offs or deeper flats. Pay them some
serious attention with a large topwater plug.
A true mixed bag lagoon session can be had with trout, big redfish,
tarpon, jacks, ladyfish, and a few other visitors. Great fun and it can happen at any time of
the day.<o:p></o:p></div>

Bullet mullet (3-5 inches) freelined tight to the mangroves. I look for deeper, open flat shorelines with
some adjacent canals. Tail-hook the
small (bullet) mullet just under his second fin on top of its back. Keep tension and the bait won’t wonder around,
but sit in the same spot (preferably next to or under the mangroves) and just
wiggle. Snook, Tarpon, trout, and reds
will pop this bait from underneath. It
is quite visible and fun to watch. <o:p></o:p></div>

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Canaveral" target="_blank">Port Canaveral</a> near coastal/lagoon waters by <a href="http://www.locallinescharters.com/" target="_blank">Local Lines charters</a> for July 1,
2015. If you have not been on the water
please be cautious; the lagoons are extremely low. This time of year the water has typically
come up substantially more than it is right now. Due to the drop and morning periods of low oxygen
on the shorelines we have been focusing on drop-offs and deeper flats. Areas of floating grass have also produced
well. Lures like the <a href="http://slayerinc.com/" target="_blank">Slayer Inc.</a> SST rigged
weedless have been producing Snook, Tarpon, Trout, Redfish, and Black
Drum. Once the sun comes up a bit! You can’t go wrong with live and cut
baits. Mullet are very prevalent in the
shallows and should be fairly easy to catch.
I personally like the large (black) mullet for soaking, and ones from
5-8 inches are best for live baiting. If
you’re stationary; tail hook your live bait.
If your moving or casting; nose hook.
30lb leader and no lead needed.
4/0 to 6/0 hooks work great. It’s been a spectacular week. And many fish were caught using these
methods. You will notice a bunch of kids with great fish in the pic's. It's summertime take a kid fishing!<o:p></o:p></div>

<b><i><u>In-shore</u></i></b> I will
be looking for that deeper edges pattern to hold for a while. Also look for the tarpon(juvi) to get more
and more active. Early mornings and late
evenings are beast for them and don’t overlook “post” thunderstorm/rain for
them to light up! As the weeks of July
progress the Bull Redfish will make themselves known on the shallow flats. They use the edges to group up for the late
summer spawn. Make sure to be skipping those mangroves, the snook are thick
this year, and seeing some monster ones.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><i><u>Near-Shore</u></i></b> The tarpon bit has been spotty and hard to pin
down. If you end up in the pogies off
the beach! You can bet they are not far
behind. Live baits produce best. Look for the beaches from Patrick AirForce
Base to Sabastian Inlet to fill with breeder snook. They stay tight to the beach and are willing
to hit many types of bait live or artificial.
They are staging for their late summer spawn and some real big ones will
be caught. These are a great target on
boat, kayak, and foot! <o:p></o:p></div>

Summer is here and the fishing is hot! Seasons don’t really change much on the Space
Coast. It kind of just goes from warm in
the fall, winter, and spring. To super-hot
in the summer! The air gets increasingly
heavy with tropical moisture and afternoon showers become an everyday occurrence. Hurricane season brings the threat of nasty
weather and big surf, but also the potential for some outstanding “outflow/culvert”
fishing. The beauty of our Space Coast fishery
is easy to see this time of year. One of
the things that make our lagoons so fishy; is our geographic location! Nestled on the convergence of tropical and
sub-tropical climate zones with ocean influence, and over 100 miles of lagoon for
fish to travel this watery wonderland; we get many visitors. Our year round resident fish have many summer
friends to share the flats, mangroves, beaches, and Inlets with. Some never leave, but only move to different
locations in the winter. Only to come
from their hiding spots and join their brethren who “migrate” up when the days
get long. I’m going to cover some info,
tips, and tactics for three of my favorite summer targets.<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
The
<a href="http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/saltwater/snapper/gray-snapper/" target="_blank">Mangrove Snapper</a> (Mango’s) are a species that basically disappear in the cooler
months. Some can still be found, but not
anything to really speak about. Summer
time warm waters are what make them happy, and we have tons of places for them
to “squat” until it cools again. The
Mango’s will move up the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), but will also enter the
lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean via Sabastian Inlet, Port Canaveral, and Ponce
Inlet. Most will range from 1-3lbs. and make
excellent dinner guests. In fact Mango’s
are one of only three fish I specifically target for meat in the lagoons (Black
drum, and sheepshead round-out that list). These aggressive schooling fish are predominantly
found on structure, pilings, and as their name suggests Mangrove
shorelines. Most mango’s are typically
caught with live baits like shrimp, mud minnows, mullet, pilchards, or pogies
that are 2-4inches in length. A main
line of 10-20lb. braid with a three foot leader of 20-30lb (mono or Fluorocarbon)
will cover most situations, but you may get smoked by a real big one. Fish close to the “structure” that has the
mango’s on it, and live chumming can be very effective if you have the bait capacity
to do so. A “live bait” J-hook in sizes
from 1/0-(size) 2 depending on bait size is what I like for this fast hitting
fish. Add a split shot or small lead
sinker to get it down a bit, but don’t use too much lead and kill the baits
action. Jig heads can also achieve this,
but can get costly after a few breakoffs.
With a 5 per angler/a day limit, and the size needed being 12inches or
larger; Mango’s are a spectacular way to fill your cooler on the space
coast. For those of you that venture
offshore; lighten that grouper gear up
a bit and get a shot at the monster double digit Mango’s on our reefs and
wrecks. <br />

<a href="http://myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/snook/" target="_blank"> Snook</a>
are an amazing fish that fight hard and will even toss in a few jumps on occasion. Its large mouth, excellent eyesight, and well-tuned
lateral line make the Snook a top predator of the lagoons and near coastal
beaches. Snook cannot survive well in
water lower than 45 deg. and will die of cold shock at those temps. The more years pass after a hard/cold
winter. The better snook fishing
is! With the mild winters we’ve experienced
over the past several years; look for snook to be readily available and larger
sized also. Just about every mangrove
shoreline will have a few hidden why under the tangle of roots and branches. Ditches, canals, and culverts that drain
swamp areas are all great places to look for the lagoon snook that average
3-9lbs. These lagoon snook will fall for
topwater plugs, <a href="http://slayerinc.com/" target="_blank">Slayer Inc.</a> plastics, and hard baits. They are also suckers for a nice live mullet,
pinfish, or live shrimp. Due to fishing
in close proximity to the structure; I will rig with 20lb braid main line, and
a 3ft 40lb leader (fluoro or mono).
These are powerful fish that will run you right into structure and break
you off. Not to mention the sandpaper lips
and razor sharp gill plates! These guys
have all the ammo for a heartbreaking fish story. Look for lagoon snook to also hold on flats adjacent
to the outflows as storms push water from the backcountry after a heavy rain. The
late summer snook spawn will have our heavyweight line-siders looking to get frisky. For a successful spawn; snook need some water
movement, and not much productive spawning happens north of Sabastian
Inlet. Though our snook won’t spawn much
at <a href="http://www.portcanaveral.com/" target="_blank">Port Canaveral</a> they still know what time it is! Snook will flood the beaches and inlets in
ever increasing numbers. Be ready and
step that gear up a bit, because these bruisers range from 10-25lbs. Large
lipped plugs, topwaters, bucktail jigs, and live baits keep my clients hooked
up. <o:p></o:p></div>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
This summertime interloper is one I’m
most fond of. The young years of my life
were spent chasing the Juvi <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarpon" target="_blank">Tarpon</a> on Pine Island Rd., and all of North <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merritt_Island,_Florida" target="_blank">Merritt Island</a>’s (MI) ditches in the summer.
Those days of living on Pine Island Rd. have past, and diversions in
flow have changed the way tarpon use north <a href="http://www.fws.gov/refuge/Merritt_Island/" target="_blank">MI</a> in general. However; a love for these fish continues, and
they are plentiful over the entire Space Coast.
Last year was (IMO) one of the best years for Juvi Tarpon I’ve seen in a
long time (they like dirty water so that might not be a good thing). I would hope this year holds the same tune,
and from what I see it is. Fishing small
lures is fun and productive on juvi poon’s, but the most excitement can be had
with a fly rod. My brother and I
perfected the side arm cast needed to send our 2-3 inch white “minnow” fly’s
under the mangrove canopy to waiting tarpon.
Many miles were biked in search of the tell tail roll that gives away
the tarpon’s presence from birth to death.
That roll and gulp of air are what give the tarpon such an advantage in
the stale low oxygen backwaters. As part
of their life cycle they spend those early years feasting on minnows of all
shapes in mangrove lined swamps, canals, and ditches. So it stands to reason these fish readily
fall for small offerings. Hard plastic
lipped plugs, topwater plugs, <a href="http://slayerinc.com/products/#!/Sinister-Swim-Tail-S-S-T/c/2618370/offset=0&sort=normal" target="_blank">Slayer Inc. SST</a>’s, Mirr-O-Dine’s, and fly’s that
are less than 4 inches in length will be clobbered by these 5-35lb poon’s. White is always a productive color, and
stands out well in the typically dark stained waters. If conditions line up you can also find large
groups of these smaller tarpon on open flats.
This early bite of “open water” Juvi tarpon will not stay in open water
as the sun rises, so be on the water predawn.
Do the Giant Tarpon from 80-150lbs come in the lagoon? Yes; every year we have big poons push up
the IRL, but they are tough to find and target for the most part. We do get a massive migration of these
beastly tarpon in our near-coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The waters off <a href="http://www.cocoabeach.com/" target="_blank">Cocoa Beach</a>, Cape Canaveral, <a href="https://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/" target="_blank">KennedySpace Center</a>, and Port Canaveral fill with pods of bait and the tarpon enjoy a
great feast. These fish must be tackled
with gear in the 20-40lb range to even stand a chance. Leader from 60-80lb and 6/0-8/0 circle hooks
should be used for the battle ahead. Ocean
Tarpon roll just like their baby brothers in the ditch, so you’ll know if you’re
in productive water. Trolling live baits
like mullet, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_menhaden" target="_blank">pogies</a>, croakers, and pinfish of the large variety will get you
the most solid hook-ups. You can hook
and land them on a large assortment of “big” lures, but they tend to shake the
hooks with these. Remember to always bow-to-the-king;
silver king that is! It’s the best way
to keep them hooked when they decide to take off jumping. A little lean forward when he goes flying is
the way to do it!<o:p></o:p></div>

Well; first I apologize! I got so wrapped up in <a href="https://www.facebook.com/nofillnokill">NoFill NoKill</a>, my
B-day, and non-stop <a href="http://locallinescharters.com/inshore_fishing_trips.php">charters</a>. That I
neglected the Local Lines forecast last week.
For those that did hit the water; it was windy as you know. The bite has been steady and solid fish are
frequent visitors on my daily trips. The
topwater bite has been spectacular, and that’s always a good time. Lots of stuff rolling on the conservation
front; Interview’s, Articles, “Meetings” with port managers, and prepping for a
rally/protest! Please be aware of the

go. Sure chug bugs and other inline
plugs work, but to really call them in you need to get that side-to-side. Tons of plugs do it! Some easier than others! Lighter winds and an uptick in moisture as we
head into the weekend could get those tarpon poppin, so check your favorite backwater
“flow” area. A bit of wind is forecasted
over the holiday weekend, but don’t shy away from those windy shores. The turbulent water can put fish on the bite
for sure. <o:p></o:p></div>

<b><i><u>Near-Shore</u></i></b> Well the
winds have made it tough, but a few days of reprieve are upon us. The wind and seas are looking good with an
uptick in both for Sunday and Memorial Day.
Friday has the potential to be epic Near-Shore kayak conditions (hint: I’m
open) with grass floating in. Tripletail
and tarpon should be good bets; along with mixed bag fishing in the bait pods. If you haven’t had a chance to get on the
Mahi fishing then this weekend should be good.
Go for the far run to get away from the crowds. North will typically get
less pressure than south. It’s going to
be busy at the ramps with the “official” start of summer so be prepared and just go with it. Everyone’s there for the same reason; some
just get to do it more often. Offer
help, but don’t impose if needed. It can
be done tactfully! <o:p></o:p></div>

Weekly fishing Forecast by <a href="http://www.locallinescharters.com/">Local Lines Charters.com</a> for May 4th, 2015.. Last week
was an interesting one. I did a little
traveling for family, did a bit of protesting (Port Cargo Rail earthen causeway),
and managed to crank out some great charters.
The bait is super thick so we spent a lot of time with live mullet in
the water. Lots of smaller trout, and a
few missed solid ones. Plenty of aggressive reds to fill the time though! The front
that pushed through late week made for a bit later of a bite on sat. <o:p></o:p></div>

lagoon predator is going bonkers for the bait right now, so fish
accordingly. Topwaters, <a href="http://slayerinc.com/">Slayer Inc</a>. SST’s,
and mullet imitating hard baits will get you the hits. Live mullet freelined are also paying well
for anglers willing to sit in a “fishy” location. A 3/0 circle hook in the tail of your mullet
will usher it to swim away. The night
trout bite on topwater will be epic as we are on the days just past the full
moon. They should have spawned hard even
with the funky little front we had this weekend and be very hungry. I like to practice catch and release on all
trout over 20 inches year round, but highly recommend it during the spawning months. Let them big girls make more. The redfish will get really aggressive when
large amounts of bait are present. Though
it looks to be windy in the beginning of the week the weekend seems to subside.
That moon will be big at night through the weekend.<o:p></o:p></div>

to heat up before the blow, so they should be ready for us too! Check out the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nd-KY5iT254">Kayak Shark Fishing Video we put out HERE</a>.<o:p></o:p></div>

Weekly fishing Forecast by <a href="http://www.locallinescharters.com/index.php">Local Lines Charters</a> for April 21, 2015.. Well
spring has sprung and the fishing is excellent.
Steady action was found all last week with artificial for a mixed bag of
seatrout, ladyfish, and jacks. All these
fish are hard hitters and put up a good fight.
Most were focused on the large schools of minnows that have invaded our
flats. This is by far some of the most
fun fishing you could ever do. Most
anything that moves will get smashed when coming though the active feeding
schools. Live bait out-fished everything
this week, though a close second was held by the topwater plugs. Bait is thick and the trout are going to
look for some grub as we start to come towards the full moon on May, 3. I still have some great late April dates open
and it will be the lead up to peak spawn.
I got some low impact (single hook vs. treble) that has been working
great on the big girls with significantly less damage. Come help me test them!!<o:p></o:p></div>

<b><i><u>In-shore</u></i></b> Fish
around the heavy bait schools early with topwater plugs. A mixed bag of trout, redfish, ladyfish, and
jacks will be willing to hammer your plug.
Winds look good (less Saturday) and afternoon storms are always a good
chance this time on year, so pay attention to the sky. The water is coming up with all these south
winds and steady afternoon, but that also means that its getting off color on
some shorelines.. Snook will be a good
bet around all the lagoons outflows and moving water. <a href="http://slayerinc.com/products/#!/Sinister-Swim-Tail-S-S-T/c/2618370/offset=0&sort=normal">Slayer Inc. SST's</a> are the bait of choice slow rolled. Hit them hard and keep them coming your

Tarpon! Tarpon! Tarpon!
Maybe we will be rewarded with some amazing beach tarpon action to make
up for the cobia season that wasn’t.
Good numbers of 100lb fish have showed up and the bait is here(ish).. Some decent amounts have been around the mid
–streets and spotty elsewhere.. Don’t overlook those 10inch mullet that are
loaded in the port .. Tarpon eat those
too! The first week of May is when I typically

Weekly Fishing Forecast for <a href="http://www.cityofcocoabeach.com/">Cocoa Beach</a>, Cape Canaveral, Port Canaveral, <a href="http://www.fws.gov/merrittisland/">Merritt Island</a>, and surrounding waters by: <a href="http://www.locallinescharters.com/inshore_fishing_trips.php">Local Lines Charters</a>... Great fishing last week and a bit of the ick towards the
end..lol Yes, even fishing guides get sick! Seatrout were hot and heavy along with slot
reds or drum depending on what mangrove you put your bait under. The late week wind and rain jumped water
levels back up and they should steady out.
Some days held a solid morning bite while others were slow until the
evening set in. Both Kayak and skiff
clients had good fun!<o:p></o:p></div>

Hello water!! The south
wind and rain at the end of last week made drastic changes on the <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?ie=UTF&hl=en&mid=zc_OnYfhnBFk.kwYU2pENe57Q">BRL</a>, IRL, M. Lagoon. We got our water back. Look for shorelines that were not fish-able to
have plenty of water and fish in search of a meal. This will be most apparent in areas with
heavy fiddler crab and minnow populations. Reds will look to get skinny and take
advantage of the “new” hunting grounds.
<a href="http://slayerinc.com/products/#!/Sinister-Swim-Tail-S-S-T/c/2618370/offset=0&sort=normal">Slayer Inc. SST’s</a> work great in this situation as the land very soft and

weedless and send it straight to the shore. <o:p></o:p></div>

Wind and seas are starting to settle and a quick trip off
the beach yesterday had us in plenty of weeds/debris. Though the seas were a bit sporty for us to
spend the time needed, the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_tripletail">tripletail</a> are here.
I would also be sure to have that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobia">cobia</a> rod ready as they will also frequently
be found in the same area. 5-10 from the
south is what’s predicted for the rest of the week, so yaks or even skiffs
should have some shots. A solid flounder
bite (typical) has settled into Port Canaveral.
Every spring those flat fish head back from their winter spawn on the continental
shelf. Typically not as heavy for the
same (inches) size as the fall fish, but that’s why these guys are hungry. Small live baits are best, but a bucktail and
strip do wonders.<o:p></o:p></div>

What fun but challenging week at Local Lines Charters.com <a href="http://locallinescharters.com/">Book Now!!</a> Lots
of trout, black drum, redfish and a few missed opportunities on some stud
snook. The end of last week brought us
our first full moon of the spring and signaled the start of our seatrout
spawn. Coming of the cold snap from the
previous weekend and right into the full moon had fish moving and not wanting
to settle. Not to mention the north
winds from that cool front slap dumped the water out of the lagoons. Just about everywhere I’ve been that was completely
grassless over winter (not normal; however new normal) has been showing good
signs of growth. Let’s hope for a good
summer growing season to give those fish something they like (health
seagrass). <o:p></o:p></div>

Trout, Trout, and more TROUT…lol But for real; we are on the back (waning)
side of the full moon and those mama trout should be very hungry. Please release all you trout over 24
inches! Trout of that size or bigger are
virtually all female and our breeding stock.
Topwwater plugs early and late, or a <a href="http://slayerinc.com/">http://slayerinc.com/</a>
(Slayer Inc.) SST. Massive amounts of bait are on the flats and
these fish are looking for a meal. If you’re
not as confident in your lure skills the just put out a few live mullet and let
her rip. Hardy and plentiful its
(mullet) the easiest of our baits to use! Tail hook with a 3/0 circle hook when your
fishing stationary or “posted up”. When poling
or moving to your next spot lip hook one and drag it behind you. That next big smash you hear at your 6 o’clock
might be your bait!!<o:p></o:p></div>

With South East winds predicted of the rest of our week and
coming off that full moon (spawning event) the tripletail of Canaveral and the
adjacent beaches should be hungry. Buoy
fish will be present, but debris (my favorite) trips will be a good bet. Look to the bight, as it acts like a giant catcher’s
mitt for that debris. The funky Cobia
season might get a little kick with these winds also, so don’t be afraid to
look. Bait (pogies) has been increasing
with some solid mixed bag fishing and the tarpon aren’t far off. Summer will be on us quick. For my blue water friends, that wind should mean
some amazing Mahi fishing also!!<o:p></o:p></div>

Thanks for checking out this weekly blog brought to you by <a href="http://www.locallinescharters.com/">http://www.locallinescharters.com/</a>
.. Clients, Tourneys, wind, and weather! What a
crazy week it was. The late week front
put a hurting on the fish, and that’s typically what a late front will do to
the space coast. Heavy north winds
dropped water levels quick. Though the
water temps didn’t get much cooler the fishes attitudes sure did. All will be back to normal though! Local Lines entertained a great group of
Kayak anglers with the help of a few great guides (Alan Ryland and Pepi Vidal);
fish were caught and fun was had. Got a
large group? We do personal tourneys, and can accommodate your needs. Logan and I fished the IFA tourney on Sunday,
and boy it was some tough going! But as I
always say; you must learn every time you touch the water. We left (smallish) fish to find bigger. The kicker was! We didn’t take the time to get a few. Come to find out. We could have walked with checks; no question. As a guide you never leave fish to find fish
until you have a few. In a catch photo release
(CPR) tourney you should do the same. The
contingency prize of a day with Logan on the water, raffle won reel (sweet),
and a great snook made it a fun tourney for sure. Never forget “stick, stay, and make it pay”…..<o:p></o:p></div>

Top water time is now!!
The bait has become so thick and fish are getting aggressive. Get those plugs out in the mornings and evenings
for some explosive strikes. Some of my
favorite fishing on the lagoons for sure!
The drop offs and deeper edges will be holding solid numbers of school
sized trout with ladyfish and jacks mixed in..
weather looks great for sight fishing and some areas are super clear(banana
river, and areas of the north lagoon,)… don’t
forget some shrimp for those present but dwindling black drum schools.. <o:p></o:p></div>

Loads of bait and some nice tripletail should be present all
week. Free swimmers and buoy fish are
both showing well. The water temps
dipped back down and it’s looking right for cobia from the shoals south. We saw tons of rays today, but few fish. Look for the wrecks and reefs to start
producing cobia also. Signs of the super
fun Bonita summer fishery are showing and I can’t wait for that light tackle madness!<o:p></o:p></div>

Thanks for checking out the new(ish) way <a href="http://www.locallinescharters.com/">http://www.locallinescharters.com/</a>
brings you the most up-to-date fishing info on Florida’s beautiful Space
Coast. What a great week of fishing our
clients have had. We are seeing spring
come in at an amazing pace! Flats have
filled with bait of all sizes, and we even have some large schools of open
water glass minnows. Those glass minnows
shouldn't be as thick as they are for a while, but we’ll take it. These minnow schools are a blast for fast
fishing, and can be a great way to introduce kids into your fishy ways. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This week’s forecast:
<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><i><u>In-shore</u></i></b> <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Look for the
seatrout bite to increase as the moon fills back out. This coming full moon will have our areas
gator trout feeling frisky for what should be their first spawn of the year. The black drum we have all enjoyed in such
great numbers will start to leave the flats to deeper water.. get them while you can, and we’re see good numbers
of solid fish in the NMZ still. Your smaller
“eating” size fish are also still abundant, and will stay up shallow longer
than the big ones.. Always carry live/fresh
dead shrimp and be ready. Calm mornings
will have their tails flying high. Some winds
are expected towards the middle of the week, and again on Saturday. So you might want to work around them.. Also the expected rain tomorrow (Monday)
might get those poons that have started to show happy. And we all love some Juvi poons. Our redfish have enjoyed the influx of bait
and are chasing schools of mullet all over the flats. Its time for that topwater bite , so brush up
on your dog walking. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b><i><u>Near-Shore<o:p></o:p></u></i></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Cobia are being
found but in small numbers on rays outside of Port Canaveral. Plenty of manta rays, but not a ton of fish! The water temps are right on the entire
Brevard coast. Its certainly worth a
try! Lots of floating grass and debris
is out there, so have your Tripletial rod ready. Reports of tarpon just a few miles south of
our section have me amp'd for the slightly warmer waters and silver kings. <o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%;"> The concept of a bucket list is a
grand idea even at a young age. With
just a bit of self-reflection and a piece of paper! Some of your most amazing Ideas can start to
take shape. Just the thought of all
those far off lands send my brain swimming with silvery Tarpon, majestic
leaping sailfish, grander Marlin within sight of land, or even Monster redfish
in the Shadows of Americas space
program. You see I have a unique birth
place and share it with a piece of our nation’s history. Merritt Island doesn’t just come into focus
in those cool (look back at earth) pictures from launching rockets. It also comes into focus in many publications,
T.V. shows, and bar stool hero stories of monster redfish. “It was the size of my boat”, they say! That very well may be true in my home town. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%;"> Many years ago NASA started
collecting land in a sparsely populated and Mosquito infested marshland now
known as Cape Canaveral/Merritt Island. The subsequent secure areas that closed
large sections of the North Banana River had an unintended consequence. In the closing of those areas our local
schools of redfish were able to flourish with little to no human pressure, and
the lack of development created optimum breading grounds. A little space coast fact; lagoons/rivers
around the space coast play host to special redfish that spawn inshore, and
that is not commonly found in their range.
This amazing “closed” area is affectionately called Jurassic park by
those who have seen the reds that lurk these waters year round. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%;"> In the early days boats and
anglers were able ply the waters in search of fish and stopping only at the Banana
Rivers “secure area” boundary (NASA Cswy/405).
But an early-90’s call for Manatee protection and increased security
gave birth to an extension of limited access water called the Banana River
No-Motor-Zone (NMZ). The access to this Manatee
area was limited only by one’s ability to paddle, push, or sail. The pristine waters that line NASA’s secure
zone were now free of motors and boy did the fish respond. Many types of common and not so common vessels
have been poled (pushed), paddled, and sailed into the farthest reaches of the
NMZ. You may see a paddle boat with so
many rods it appears to be a floating porcupine or come across four big guys in
one little Johnboat, and the obvious combo package of a canoe with a sail has
certainly been spotted. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%;"> I cut my teeth in the NMZ
with my trusty canoe! My father would
drop my fishing buddies and me at KARS Park on his way to work. He worked on the Space programs my entire
life; not to mention everyone else in my family including me (about 200 years
of combined service). So this gave us
access to the NMZ front park that only NASA employees could use called “KARS Park”. KARS as it’s commonly called; not only has camping
and a marina. It also serves as the best
NMZ launch on its western shore with monster redfish caught right off the camp
site docks frequently. These playful
fishing missions for hours with my fish minded school friends were only the
beginning of my lifelong love for the NMZ’s huge resident redfish. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 9.5pt; line-height: 115%;"> Several years back I retired that trusty
old canoe. These days my Fleet of fully
rigged fishing kayaks get us around the NMZ with a bit more efficiency and
style. But the launch spot has remained
the same KARS Park. The stunning
backdrop of tree lined shores and towering launch pads have witnessed broom
sized redfish tails appearing from the mist of a foggy central Florida mornings
for many years. And countless times I
can recall the hart stopping crush of a three foot redfish eating a topwater
plug on still predawn mornings with the flash of Cape Canaveral’s famous
lighthouse not yet drowned out by a stunning burst of sunrise color. Or the huge American flag and NASA logo on
the side of the massive VAB building adorning the horizon while you are towed
off by a redfish the size of your leg that ate a mullet chunk the size of you
fist. With just a bit of research you
could paint yourself into one of these scenes, and KARS helped you in achieving
this attainable goal by starting to allow anyone to launch in the NMZ for a $5
a boat fee. So come enjoy a guided trip
or set out on your own, but this unique Florida destination should top your
bucket list.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
